Day 6 - Vienna

We began today with a 1/2 day city tour of the city.  Vienna is said to be one of Europe’s most elegant and romantic cities with remarkable buildings, the Hapsburg Palace (this also is where the Lipizzaners horses are trained and preform), St. Stephan’s Cathedral and so much more.  The bicycles you see above are a common site and they are rentals.  We remained downtown after the tour to do some exploring on our own.

Our first stop was at the Sacher Hotel for their famous Sacher torte. Now THAT’s a delicious delicacy. Thanks Margie, and we had a bite for you. YUM!!!

There is a large connecting street in the city known as the pedestrian zone, and it is a huge open air shopping area.  All the famous upscale brands and a lot more are here.  We went to a 3 story Swarovski store, a candy shop and did lots of window shopping.  And of course I didn’t know where to turn to take more pictures.

In the afternoon we me up with our Chef and a few people from the ship, at the local permanent Farmers Market that was just chocked full of goodies.  He walked us through and shared information about cheeses, walnuts (from Calif?) olives, produce, truffles, bread and, of course, sweets. At each location, he was greeted warmly because he shops there regularly. He buys goods from this market and uses it in his menus on board ship.

More to this story in the following blog.  Vienna has so much to see.
